Character design is the part of my practice I never put down. While I spend most days writing code as a CTO, I've spent two decades building a parallel body of work as a character designer for animation — concepting heroes, villains, creatures, and ensemble casts that hold up across illustration, sequential art, and 3D production.

My process starts with silhouette and read: a character has to work as a thumbnail before it works as a finished render. From there I push into shape language, color script, costume detail, and turnarounds. I work primarily in Procreate and Photoshop for 2D illustration and concept passes, and move into ZBrush and Blender when a character needs a full 3D pipeline. Both pipelines feed each other.

How I think about character design

A great character isn't a pretty drawing — it's a piece of design that communicates personality before the audience even knows what they're looking at. Shape language tells you who this person is. Silhouette tells you whether they'll read across distances. Costume tells you their world, their status, their constraints. I try to design every character so that an animator, a comic artist, or a 3D modeler could pick up the sheet and build from it without me in the room.
